Mary Gaines Bernard Celebrates the Life and Music of Donna Summer
Donna Summer was known as the Queen of Disco. She had 14 Top Ten hits with songs like “Love to Love You Baby, “ “Last Dance,” “Bad Girls, “On the Radio” and the anthem “No More Tears (Enough is Enough)” that she sang with Barbra Streisand. Now Summer’s sister, Mary Gaines Bernard, Celebrates the Life and Music of Donna Summer, and she knows of what she sings. Bernard sang with her big sister for more than 30 years and has all of the stories and songs to take you on a journey through the life of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and five-time Grammy winner who died in 2012.
LaDonna Gaines, who became Donna Summer, began singing at church and she appeared in high school musicals in Boston. A role in the German version of the show Hair sent her across the ocean and she began her recording career in Europe. In 1975, she recorded “Love to Love You Baby” for radio and it played in the clubs, and by 1976 it went gold, while the album sold more than a million copies. Summer was on her way.
Now her sister has put together a Celebration of the Life and Music of Donna Summer as told by someone who knew her best. The stories and hit songs you remember take you through a musical journey of her sister’s amazing career. You’ll hear all the stories from the road and the hits you loved.
You can close your eyes, and you are sure Donna Summer is singing, but you’ll want to open them because Mary encourages the audience to enjoy the music and become part of the show. It’s hard for people to stay in their seats while listening to the music and you’ll want to channel your inner disco. Don’t forget to save the last dance.
