From the work songs of slavery (“Hoe Emma Hoe”) and the hymns of the Underground Railroad (“Follow the Drinking Gourd”) to the blues of Beale Street and the anthems of the Civil Rights Movement, music has always been an integral part of our nation’s past. In this production, our actor/singers tell the stories behind these famous and forgotten hymns, work-songs and musical styles while sampling songs that spread across continents, genres and centuries.
