GAELIC STORM
If you’ve seen James Cameron’s movie “Titanic,” you’ve seen Gaelic Storm. The group got its big break when it appeared as the Celtic party band that played for the ship’s steerage party in the film. Their popularity skyrocketed, and over a decade later they’re still going strong, with a large, loyal and ever-growing international following.
Gaelic Storm plays Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, but they’re hardly traditionalists. The quintet adds sounds from today, drawing influences from American rock and pop, as well as music styles from around the globe. To date, they’ve released seven albums – with their latest, “Cabbage,” debuting at #1 on the Billboard world chart. Their song, “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” was even used in a Hallmark greeting card.
References to well-known Irish people, places and things abound in Gaelic Storm’s original material – from black and tan ale to the classic red-haired, green-eyed lass. Lively instrumentals are also part of the mix. And then there are the drinking songs. Gaelic Storm has a few of them, the most recent being “Chucky Timm,” which is based on a real life friend and fan.
Their recording success notwithstanding, Gaelic Storm is, at heart, a band that must be experienced live. “We are first and foremost a live band,” says guitarist/singer/composer Steve Twigger. “We got together . . . to enjoy ourselves and enjoy being out with the audience.” Lead vocalist Patrick Murphy agrees: “We made a promise to each other that the day we stop having fun, we stop.” Their devoted fans will tell you that their performances are more fun than ever. And thankfully, they show no sign of stopping.
