GLENN MILLER ORCHESTRA
“A band ought to have a sound all of its own. It ought to have a personality.” – Glenn Miller
If any musical group defines the big band era, it’s the Glenn Miller Orchestra. The iconic band is considered to be one of the greatest of all time. And with a roster of classic hits like “Moonlight Serenade,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “A String of Pearls,” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” who can argue?
Glenn Miller earned his musical chops playing horn with such notables as Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. He recorded under his own name for the first time in 1935, but it wasn’t until he developed his band’s own unique “personality” that the hits began.
The Glenn Miller Orchestra’s sound became defined by a clarinet and tenor sax holding the melody line, supported harmonically by three additional saxophones. This arrangement became the band’s recognizable, signature style that would set it apart.
Today, the Glenn Miller Orchestra carries on this musical tradition, under the direction of trombonist Gary Tole. Get ready for a concert rich in history, and resonating with the best of the big band sound.
