The Lyric Theatre Presents

Sarge

A rare triple threat, Sarge delivers spot-on comedy, a virtuoso piano performance, and an extensive vocal range all in one show. The Florida-born entertainer is known to come up with elaborate melodies on the spot with the help of audience suggestions, promising that no two of his shows are ever alike. Featured on HBO and Comedy Central, Sarge has a reputation for delivering a one-of-a-kind combination of hilarious stand-up comedy and passionate musicality.

Sarge was born in Florida during the Civil Rights Movement to a Jewish mother and a Black father. He was put up for adoption after birth and was eventually taken in by a generous couple who raised him on Long Island, New York. He showed immediate interest in music as a child, learning to play the piano without any training or prior experience at the age of 6. As a young man in his 20s, Sarge went through a difficult period in his life, finding himself addicted to drugs and living on the streets of Manhattan. He finally quit cold turkey in 1990 and committed the rest of his life to helping others who are going through the same struggle he experienced first-hand. This experience was invaluable to his personal and professional development as a comedian, finding solace in comedy as a form of coping with difficult situations.

After his initial difficulties, Sarge began his career in the entertainment industry writing, producing and performing for Fox’s well-received sports program “Best Damn Sports Show Period” and working as a nationally syndicated radio host for Fox Sport Radio. Despite his success, Sarge felt something was missing in his life. He was finally convinced to pursue a career in stand-up comedy when fellow colleagues and friends assured the young aspiring comedian of his talent and drive for success.

Sarge’s brave decision paid off and now the multi-talented performer has headlined at some of the biggest and best venues in the nation including Radio City Music Hall. He’s opened for major musicians such as Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys, and Donna Summer and has even performed for US troops in Iraq. His inspired musicianship and rapid-fire observational comedy has impressed audiences from New York City to Baghdad and he continues to tickle the ivories and funny bones everywhere.
