Capitol Steps

Originally created by a group of Senate staffers with the goal to satirize their fellow employers and coworkers, Capitol Steps has now become a nation-wide sensation, bringing topical jokes and insider humor to stages across the country. The hilarious show leaves no stone unturned and no scandal forgotten, featuring sensational parodies sung by talented vocalists with the sharpest of wit. Capitol Steps has been featured on national television, from NBC to PBS, and can be heard four times a year on NPR for a radio special entitled “Politics Takes a Holiday.”

In 1981, a group of Senate staff members got together to come up with a series of song parodies for a Christmas party performance. The show was such a success on Capitol Hill that the members of the group decided to try their luck as a traveling performance group. Three decades later, the veteran troupe has received wide-reaching success and critical accolades for their biting wit and fresh take on contemporary political topics. They’ve released 30 albums with their famous song parodies, including their latest album entitled “Take the Money and Run – For President.”

Although Capitol Steps may no longer contain the original Senate staffers who started the group, the current performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and have 62 collective years of House and Senate staff experience under their belt. One of their most talked-about bits is “Lirty Dies”, a quick-paced run-through of all the latest national scandals in the form of spoonerisms, or word play that switches letters to baffle and jumble the audience in the expected fashion of politics. Capitol Steps is a side-splitting and sophisticated comedy show with a political twist.
