SOLD OUT ~ The 5th Dimension
Florence LaRue, an original and continuing member of The 5th Dimension, knew from the beginning that what they had was something special. “The moment I got into the group, I believed there was hope and promise, “she told American Songwriter. “I didn’t want to be a part of anything that was just for fun.”
LaRue’s instincts were so right. The group recorded “Up, Up, and Away,” in 1967 and catapulted to stardom. The group has more than 25 million in record sales, 22 Top 40 hits, and five Number One songs, including “Up, Up and Away,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “Last Night I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All” and “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine in,” which became an anthem for the 1960s and ‘70s. The group has performed on the world’s most famous stages, including Radio City Music Hall, alongside Frank Sinatra, and with unforgettable appearances on television on The Ed Sullivan Show, Soul Train, and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. They have secured a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame, with 14 gold records, six platinum records and six Grammy Awards.
In 2015, The 5th Dimension celebrated 50 years of extraordinary entertainment. Original member LaRue and company continue to deliver dynamic performances that stand the test of time, remaining true to their original five-part harmonic sound. The group remains versatile, attracting audiences of all ages and nationalities. Within the last decade, they have taken the stage with several prestigious symphony orchestras, entertained at the White House, and performed for families on each coast at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. They continue to sell out venues across the United States, Europe, and Asia, entertaining old friends and making new ones.
In a recent review, a White Plains, New York paper captured their decades-long appeal. “The 5th Dimensions’ voices and harmony are stronger, more emotional, and as meaningful, perhaps more meaningful, than when they first became hits in the 1965-1975 era. Today’s Dimensions deliver a tight, personal show, as crisp as old Top 40 radio.”
It’s fitting that Florence LaRue has the last word.
“It was very exciting,” she said.” I didn’t really have time to realize the extent of our popularity until after, when I was sitting back and reflecting. Wow, we went to the White House, we toured with Frank Sinatra! When you’re in the process of doing something, I don’t think you realize the impact while you’re doing it. It’s just what you do. When you look back, it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, I did that. I’m very proud of that.”
Come see the show and let the sunshine in.
