Blending the Blues with Bluegrass

Monday, April 20, 2015

On April 24th, blues guitarist Albert Cummings will perform at The Lyric Theatre in downtown Stuart. A Massachusetts native, Albert Cummings learned guitar as a young man from his father. At the age of 12, he switched to the banjo, traveling across the country to music festivals and winning several high school picking contests. It wasn’t until Cummings was in college that he returned to the guitar. After seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan perform, Albert Cummings devoted himself fully to the blues. In the ‘90s, Cummings formed the short-lived band Swamp Yankee, only to begin a successful solo career by the beginning of the 21st century. After playing briefly with Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section Double Trouble, Cummings recorded the 2003 album, From the Heart (Under the Radar) with Vaughan’s former bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton. A year later, Albert Cummings signed with Blind Pig Records, beginning a relationship that still stands today. Released in 2012, Cummings’ album No Regrets debuted at #1 in the U.S., Canada, and France on the iTunes Blues Charts. His latest, yet to be titled, album features the leader of Conan O’Brien’s Basic Cable Band, Jimmy Vivino. The album, produced by David Z, will be released later this summer. Over his 15 year career, Cummings has worked with some of the biggest names in blues, including Double Trouble, BB King, and Johnny Winter. Named “sizzling” by Billboard Magazine, Albert Cummings has a unique style. The guitarist incorporates his bluegrass background into the blues genre, giving his performances a unique sound. Cummings is always looking to improve his art. As the musician explained in an interview with GuitarWorld, “My journey is relatively new, but every day I learn something new and I keep pushing on. It's all about gaining fans one at a time and as long as I keep moving forward I am heading towards my goals.” Albert Cummings will perform at The Lyric Theatre on April 24th at 7:00pm. Tickets are available online at LyricTheatre.com or through The Lyric Box Office at (772) 286-7827.
